For decades, foreign nationals wishing to enter Afghanistan were required to obtain a visa. These permissions were categorized based on the purpose of the visit.

Common Visa Types

While specific requirements varied, the standard categories generally included:

  • Tourist Visa: Issued to individuals visiting for sightseeing or visiting friends and family. These were typically valid for a single entry of up to 30 days.
  • Business Visa: Designed for investors and corporate representatives. Applicants usually required a letter of invitation from a local company or the Afghan Chamber of Commerce.
  • Work Visa: Mandatory for foreign nationals employed by NGOs, international organizations, or private firms. This process was often linked to obtaining a work permit from the Ministry of Labor.
  • Media Visa: A specialized category for journalists and film crews. This visa often required specific accreditation from the Ministry of Information and Culture.

The Application Process

The standard protocol for obtaining a visa involved submitting a valid passport (with at least six months of validity), recent passport-sized photos, a completed application form, and the requisite fee. Interviews at the embassy were common practice to verify the intent of travel.
